A Practical Approach to Conservation on Archaeological Excavation

The Course APACHE in the Villa in Praediis (Sipicciano-Graffignano – VT, Campo la Noce), was born from the collaboration between YOCOCU’s experience in the conservation on archaeological excavations and the approach to the management of archeological sites developed by the association CULTRA .

This international course offers a collaborative and multidisciplinary learning environment conceived for students and young professionals involved in the conservation and management of archaeological sites and cultural heritage.  The focus is  targeted to the practical training of participants.

In addition to a brief theoretical introduction, providing insight into the issues related to conservation methods and materials, the candidates will work on specific elements, experiencing first aid restoration, maneuvering, transportation, and storage of finds.  The workshop will introduce participants to the methods of extraction from the ground and to the study and documentation of artifacts, addressing the issues related to the conservation  treatment (cleaning, consolidation, reconstruction, glueing); selection of chemical products; importance of environmental parameters, and correct methods of storage and musealization. The course offers a unique opportunity to operate on original finds directly on the archaeological excavation, carrying out interventions aimed at the recovery and conservation of archaeological artifacts and structures.
